Groom Style Guide 2027: Fit First, Fabric Second, Trend Last
Groom content is the most under-planned part of most wedding timelines. A well-fitted mid-range suit reads better in photos than an expensive poorly-fitted one. Start 5–6 months out.
Decode the dress code before you shop
| On the invitation | What to wear | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Black tie | Dinner jacket, grosgrain lapel, black bow tie, patent or polished oxford | Wearing a standard black business suit with a long tie |
| Black tie optional | Dark suit or tuxedo; either is correct | Mixing tuxedo pieces with a suit jacket |
| Formal / semi-formal | Dark wool suit, white or pale shirt, silk tie | Assuming "formal" means a tuxedo |
| Cocktail | Suit, no tie required; pocket square optional | Overdressing to black tie |
| Destination / beach | Lightweight linen or tropical wool, unlined jacket | Heavy structured wool in humidity |
Fit checklist — try all five at once
- Shoulder seam ends exactly where the shoulder bone ends. This is the one thing a tailor cannot cheaply fix.
- Jacket length covers the seat; with arms relaxed, the hem roughly meets the thumb knuckle.
- Sleeve shows ¼–½ inch of shirt cuff.
- Trouser break — slight or none for a modern line; no pooling over the shoe.
- Collar — no gap between neck and collar band when buttoned.
Get dressed fully for the fitting: correct shoes, shirt, and underlayers. Alterations done over a different shoe height are wrong on the day.
Fabric by season and venue
- Summer / outdoor: tropical wool (wrinkle-resistant, breathes) or linen blend. Avoid heavy lining.
- Winter / indoor: mid-weight wool, flannel, or velvet dinner jacket for black tie.
- Humid destination: unlined or half-lined construction; pack a steamer, not an iron.
Alteration timeline working backwards
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| 5–6 months out | Choose dress code and color direction; book a fitting |
| 4 months out | Purchase or reserve rental; order shoes |
| 8–10 weeks out | First alteration with the real shoes and shirt |
| 3–4 weeks out | Final fitting; try the full look including all accessories |
| 1 week out | Steam, hang in a breathable bag, pack an emergency kit |
Photo test
Take one photo in daylight and one with a phone flash in the exact outfit. Flash exposes sheen mismatches between jacket and trousers that daylight hides.
